Hi, My name is Jon.

I’m a Registered Dietitian, and Clinical Exercise Physiologist based in Bend, OR where I live with my wife and two chiweenies.

Before I became a dietitian I did marketing, working at several startups in the tech industry, and even a guitar maker. But, marketing never satisfied my soul. While I loved telling stories, sharing information, and connecting with people, I wanted to impact people in a way that could improve their life.

So, I left my career to go back to school for nutrition and exercise physiology, graduating at the top of my class at Washington State University with a bachelor of science and a masters degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. In 2018 after interning at a Cardiac Rehab center in Spokane, WA, I became an ACSM-certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist. Then, in December of 2020, I completed my goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. You can learn more about why I became a dietitian here.

Today, I work full-time as an inpatient Clinical Dietitian at St. Charles Medical Center, in Bend, OR. I also offer nutrition counseling as part of my own private practice, High Desert Dietitians, LLC.

I’m passionate about helping people make lifestyle changes that help prevent and slow the onset of disease, while also empowering them to feel more satisfied with their diet choices and fitness patterns.

A Native to the Northwest…

I spent the early years of my life growing up on Whidbey Island, located in the Puget Sound of Washington State. Aside from 2 years in Southern California, I’ve spent my entire life in the Pacific Northwest.

Now, I live in Bend, OR. Although I sometimes miss the smell of salt water, I now enjoy the smell of juniper, and am happy to call the central Oregon high desert my home.

Although I love my work…

Life is about more than just nutrition, health and exercise.

On the weekends, my wife and I can be found exploring the mountains, looking for adventure. I enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking, nordic skiing, trail running, and hiking. If it’s an outdoor activity that involves movement and nature, I will most likely love it.

One of my proudest moments was completing the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2021. The best part about it was that I got to hike the entire thing with my wonderful wife, who is the ongoing muse of my adventures. You can read about those adventures here.

I’ve played guitar since I was 14 years old, and started writing songs not long after that. But, self-doubt and imposter syndrome kept me from pursuing what I wanted. It wasn’t until my thirties that I started a band, Fellow Traveler. We performed countless shows, wrote dozens of songs, and recorded an album.

Starting a band and recording an album was one of my favorite accomplishments in life. It’s a moment I can look back on and be reminded of the value in vulnerability and that embracing the unknown is required to make life worth living.

You can listen to the full Fellow Traveler album here.

After dating for 5 years, I married the woman of my dreams in October of 2016. She is smart, beautiful, and makes me want to be the best version of myself I can be.

Our life revolves around the outdoors, good food, friends, family and chiweenies. Here we are oceanside road tripping with our two chiweenies, Toby and Frieda. I’m immensely grateful for my entire family and as I get older I am continually reminded of the importance of remaining connected with family, even when it’s difficult. They make us stronger and better people.

My grandmother was a german descendant of Martin Luther. Her parents migrated from Ukraine to North Dakota prior to World War I. Later, my grandmother boarded a train at the age of 18 to work at Boeing as Rosie the Riveter during World War II. I am so proud and thankful for the prominent role she had in forming who I have become.

Although I left my career in marketing, I still like to put my knowledge and skills to use. But instead of using my marketing powers to sell products, my goal is to use marketing to help people live healthier lives.

I do this through my blog, as well as by helping other dietitians and health experts craft content. I currently offer limited consulting services on SEO for dietitians and nutrition copywriting.
