Building Your Nutrition Website

Creating your first website can be a little bit confusing. If you’re a therapist, dietitian, or wellness provider striking out on launching your first website, you’ll quickly realize that there’s a lot of decisions to make. Here are just a few of the initial questions that often pop into people’s mind:

  • What should my domain name be?
  • Where should I host my website?
  • Should I hire someone to create my website or do it myself?

Don’t worry. I can help you sort these questions out. But, before you get overwhelmed with the technical details, let me ask you the most important question of all – why are you building a website?

What’s the Purpose of Your Website?

Your website is like a hub. It’s a place for people to learn about you and the services you provide. From a potential clients perspective, they want to know if you offer the services they’re looking for, and they’re trying to picture themselves working with you. If your website is able to connect with their needs, they’ll likely contact you to schedule an appointment.

In marketing, we call this a conversion. It occurs when a stranger calls you to schedule an appointment, thus converting from a stranger to a client.

The goal of your website is to convert people into clients. Large companies like Amazon have teams of people who focus only on optimizing websites for conversions. They test and develop designs that increase sales, they survey users, and they continually track the performance of each and every page. For you, that would be a waste of time.

Instead, use the following 3 guidelines for your website:

  1. Make it Look Professional
  2. Develop Messaging and Content That Resonates with Potential Clients
  3. Make it Easy to Contact You for an Appointment

If your website adheres to these basic guidelines, you will convert visitors into clients. I’m certain of that.

The Best Website Options for Dietitians

Fortunately, creating a professional looking website is easier and cheaper than ever before. Depending on your time and budget, you can either develop a website yourself or hire someone to do it for you, without breaking the bank. Whichever route you take, I recommend developing your website with one of the following:

  1. WordPress
  2. Squarespace

I personally prefer WordPress, and use it for all the websites I create. However, both of these options are excellent user friendly choices. Both WordPress, and Squarespace have design templates which you can simply install and instantly have a professional looking design, without having to pay a designer to create a custom built site.

Setting up the templates still take time, but it’s significantly less time and money than having a custom site built from scratch. Like I said, I prefer WordPress, and I always recommend using a design theme. This saves you time and money to invest toward creating content, and marketing your site. If you take the WordPress route, I recommend Studiopress themes.

How to Get More People to Your Website

Okay, now let’s talk tactics. You could have a beautiful website that converts like crazy, but if no one is visiting your website, what good is that beautiful website?

A website is only useful if people see it. So, how do you do that?

When it comes time to create a website for your practice, it can sometimes be confusing. After all, there’s so many different options to choose from. But, your choices essentially boil down to two primary choices:

  • You can create the website yourself.
  • Or, you can hire someone to build a website for you.

So, what’s the right option for you? It’s going to depend on your own preference of course.

Building Your Own Nutrition Website

There are a number of benefits to building your own website. First of all, your money will remain in your pocket, rather than going to someone else to build your website. You’ll also learn a lot in the process, and gain a working knowledge of your website, so you can make changes in the future. If you’re into that kind of thing, it can be highly satisfying.

However, building your own website does require some hands-on technical work. Fortunately, with website builders like Squarespace, and WordPress, the technical barrier is far lower than it used to be. But still, if you’re unfamiliar with either of those platforms, it’s probably going to require some time to get things right.

If that sounds like somewhere you want to spend your time, then great. But if it sounds like a pain, you might be better off hiring an expert to take care of it for you.

Hiring Someone to Build Your Nutrition Website

This is a great option if you don’t have much time to spend on building your website. You can hire someone to do what they do best, while you continue doing what you do best… working with your patients.

Of course, if you hire someone, that’s going to be money out of pocket. But the good news is that you’ll save your own time, and end up with a professional looking design, without the hassle of doing it yourself.

If you do decide to hire someone, here are a few tips I recommend:

1) Have Them Use WordPress or Squarespace

I recommend WordPress and Squarespace no matter what. That’s because they are both affordable website solutions, that are also easy to use. Even if you don’t build the website yourself, you should know how to edit or add content to your webpages. And, that’s super simple to do in both WordPress and Squarespace.

2) Don’t Create a Custom Design

A lot of web developers will want to create a new web design for you from scratch. I never recommend that. Why? Because custom work is expensive, and you don’t need it. There are a ton of excellent themes already developed for WordPress and Squarespace. They look professional, and work great. When you get a custom design, things can get complicated, and expensive. And, that doesn’t help you to market your practice any better. Stick with the pre-built website themes.

For WordPress, I used to recommend Studiopress themes, but have more recently become fond of Kadence themes.

3) Make Sure They Know SEO

At the same time you build your website, you should make sure it’s setup according to SEO best practices. That’s because good website design is crucial to SEO. Without at least a basic understanding of how search engines work, your website will fail to show up in Google’s search results. But if you set it up correctly from day one, you’ll increase your chances of showing up.

4) Have Them Show You How to Add Content and Pages

Even if you didn’t design your website, it’s a good idea to know how to add or remove content from your website. As time goes on you’ll probably want to add new web pages, or edit existing ones. And, it’s helpful if you don’t have to pay someone to do that every time.

Comprehensive Websites for Dietitians

The strength of your website will ultimately influence the effectiveness of your marketing. If done correctly you’ll feed the Search Engines quality content, and in exchange they’ll send you traffic and potential clients.

When you create your website, focus on creating something simple that fulfills the basics:

  • Search Engine Friendly: It takes times to increase your blog traffic, so it’s important to start with a solid SEO foundation That means optimizing your existing content and structure before the site launches, so you increase your odds of getting picked up by Google, Bing, and Yahoo. It doesn’t matter how perfect your site looks if no one ever sees it.
  • Person Friendly Content: Search engines are important… but people are more important. Some SEO experts will have you think that your site has to be stuffed with keywords to appeal to the search engines. This isn’t true, and even if it was – what’s the point in getting traffic to your site if it’s not of value to people? Truth is, words matter. Learn how to write in a way that connects with your readers.
  • Elegant Design: Your website is the face of your business and often the first thing people encounter when they’re looking for a therapist. Therefore, it should provide an inviting atmosphere, and present you as the professional you are. Simplicity is key. Using a WordPress theme like Kadence will help you easily achieve this.
