My Approach

What to expect with Nutrition Counseling

Before we work together, I like to arrange 15-20 minutes for a quick call. This gives me the opportunity to learn more about you and your health goals. And it gives you the no-obligation opportunity to ask me questions.

If we’re a good fit for each other, we’ll schedule a time for our first nutrition counseling session.

what to expect from nutrition counseling

Each nutrition counseling session will last 45-60 minutes. Each session will be oriented around your specific needs, and at the end, I’ll provide you with homework to help you apply what you learn.

As your dietitian, my goal is to be a guide on your health journey. I’m not going to tell you what to eat, or what not to eat. I won’t police your diet.

Instead, I want to help you:

  • Better understand how certain foods and diet patterns can influence your health
  • Make lasting dietary changes that fit your lifestyle while helping you to achieve your health goals
  • Empower yourself to make informed diet choices with confidence

I believe that nutrition is about more than just the nutrient profile of the foods we eat.

So, although I talk to my clients about diet, food, vitamins, and nutrients, we also examine behavior patterns. Because our behaviors influence what we eat, and why we eat.

My approach is grounded in

Mindful Eating

Our species is more distracted than ever.

Mindful eating allows you to get in touch with your own internal compass, rather than using external cues like calorie counting to make dietary choices.

When you pair mindful eating with nutrition knowledge, the impact is substantial. That’s why mindful eating is a core skill I teach my clients.

goal Setting

How will you achieve success unless you can define what success looks like? I’ll help you set longer-term outcome goals, and then help you set smaller action-oriented goals to get there.

Nutrition Knowledge

Depending on your health goals, we’ll discuss the nutritional components that have the potential to benefit you the most. All recommendations are thoroughly researched and based in science.

Accountability & Guidance

Knowledge is power. But, it’s not enough to create change. You must take action to apply what you learn. I help my clients to turn knowledge into action and reorient when they have setbacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

prior to our first session, I’ll send you a link to a secure online payment where you can use a credit or debit card. Payment is required in full at the time of service.

At the minimum, I recommend 2 sessions. This allows you to gain insight, apply lessons and then gain feedback in a follow-up session. However, research suggests that people gain the most benefit and lasting change from 6 or more visits with a dietitian. Changing lifelong habits and achieving better health is a gradual process that takes time.

After you schedule your first appointment, you’ll receive several forms to fill out. This will include a HIPPA form, as well as a health history Questionnaire for me to review. I’ll use this information to form my initial assessment and follow up if i have any questions prior to our first appointment. I may also ask you to keep a food journal or share lab information, if relevant to our appointment.

Yes. I currently accept PacificSource, First Choice Health, and UnitedHealthcare. However, please verify your insurance plan covers nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy. If you have another insurance provider, I can also provide you with a super bill to submit for reimbursement.

When I first start working with people, I suggest weekly appointments for the first 2-4 sessions. As you become more confident in your nutrition plan, bi-weekly or monthly sessions help provide accountability and ongoing support so you can overcome obstacles when they happen and create healthy habits that last for the long haul.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you’re unable to make an appointment, please let me know 24 hours in advance and we’ll find an appropriate time to reschedule.

Currently, I only provide nutrition counseling to adults 18 years or older. If you’re looking for a pediatric dietitian or nutritionist for your child or teenager, I’m happy to provide a few recommendations.
